What Exactly Is A Physic?
Tuesday, 6. December 2011
A physic is any person who has the ability (which may come in many forms) to access information hidden from the common person. They have existed throughout the ages, and are looked to for guidance, insight, and information by people from all walks of life. Psychics have practiced their art under many names: seers, augurers, fortune tellers, mediums, and the like, but all share the ability to interpret and communicate information from a variety of occult sources for the benefit of others.
Don’t confuse “occult” with anything satanic. “Occult” comes from the Latin for “hidden” or “obscured.” It simply means that most of us can’t see these sources of information, which is why we may look to those who can for answers to many of life’s questions. Whether or not you believe in psychic abilities, many people who’ve sought advice from a psychic testify to the accuracy of the information they were given and are satisfied with the decisions they’ve made as a result. So should you consult a psychic? The answer to that depends on why you want to see one and what you hope to get from the experience. Do you have questions about your love life, your career or an upcoming move? Do you want to investigate your past lives, understand obstacles to your success or find your purpose in life? Then visiting a psychic could be very helpful to you. If you’re interested purely for its entertainment value, that’s okay, too, as long as you don’t insult the psychic you see. If your reasons are negative, motivated by anger or revenge or if confusion and indecision has led you to thoughts of suicide, you’d be better off talking about your feelings with a trained therapist. You can arrange a session with a psychic at some point in the future when you’re feeling whole and balanced.
If you’re considering visiting a psychic for the first time, you probably have a lot of questions as to how to go about it. For instance, you may want to know: “How do I choose a psychic? How can I tell who’s the “real deal?” What happens during a psychic reading? Can I change my future once it’s been foretold?” Learning a little about the kinds psychics there are and methods they use will help you decide how or whether to proceed. In this and upcoming columns, we’ll answer those questions and more so that you can choose the best psychic for your situation.
Let’s start with “How do I choose a psychic?” Not all psychics have the same abilities and many employ different methods to focus their attention and access information. You’ll probably feel a pull toward a certain ability or method, so pay attention to your gut reaction as you read through the list below and short description of each. You can find out more about each kind later. For now, just become acquainted with the variety and kinds of psychics you can consult.
Astrologer/Astrologist: Charts the placement of stars and planets at the time and place of your birth to provide insights into your personality, strengths, and weaknesses.
Clairvoyant, Clairaudient, Clairsentient: “Clear seeing” describes psychics who can see your past and future in their mind’s eye. “Clear hearing” describes those who hear messages or information about you from unseen entities and pass it along to you. “Clear feeling” psychics convey messages to you from intuition or feelings about you.
Metonymist, Psychometrist: These terms describe a psychic who gets strong impressions about you by holding an object of yours, like a ring or a necklace, or even from just shaking your hand.
Palm Reader: Often depicted in movies and on TV, these psychics study the lines in your hands to predict your life story.
Tarot Card Reader/Cartomanist: Also commonly featured in the media, card readers use specialized or regular decks of cards that tell a story of your present and future when a layout of cards chosen “randomly” by you is interpreted.
Tea Leaf Reader: Also familiar is one who brews you a cup of tea from whole leaves and then interprets their positions at the bottom of the cup in relation to your life.
Channeler, Medium: One who serves as a “middleman” between the living and the dead to impart messages to you. Some go into trances, some speak normally.
Crystal Ball Reader: The stereotypical psychic or witch who gazes into a crystal ball and sees scenes of your life unfolding.
Are you surprised at the variety of psychic abilities? How many were you familiar with? Do you feel a “pull” toward any of them? For now, just let your impressions wash over you. More information is forthcoming!
